WHERE DID I GROW UP?
I was lucky to grow up in Ticonderoga, a paper mill town in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York. In the winter, we skated on the lakes, raced our sleds, and built igloos. My high school class had only 33 students, so every one of us felt special.
Now, I live in Corvallis, Oregon, where I was a mom to two daughters and I was a Camp Fire leader for twelve years. My granddaughter's name is Sierra. After she and I built a solar oven, we baked snickerdoodles in it.
AM I A TEACHER?
Yes, I am! I teach creative writing classes to grown-ups. Also, I lead workshops for kids in the schools and for adults at writers' conferences.
In spring of 2011, I taught 11 wonderful students who were writing stories about their own lives -- memoir. This fall, my students learned the tools of writing fiction and memoir -- characters, plots, dialogue, and so on. These classes are offered through Linn Benton Community College in Corvallis. Spring of 2012 will see me teaching memoir again.
DO I SKYPE?
WHEE, indeed I do. E-mail me to set up a time when I can meet with a class of students, ages 8-12. I'll answer writing questions, lead a workshop, show off my dog.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Just accepted for publication: the fourth Katie Jordan book! When Katie decides to hold a talent show in the backyard to show everyone how wonderful her new dog is, trouble begins. Lucy Dog forgets how to do her tricks. Claire is terrified a new brother might move in and wreck her perfect house, and she uncovers his terrible secret. As if that's not enough, Katie tries to make Ms. Morgan fall in love with her dad in spite of their crazy family.
WHAT'S THE TITLE?
I need help. I don't know. Maybe it will be Wonder Dog of Summer. Any suggestions? Send your ideas for a title to me.

Here's my own Lucy Dog, listening to Tails of Spring Break. She really likes the parts where China Cat goes crazy!
I wrote an essay about learning to play the Celtic harp and called it "UNSTRUNG," because that's the way I feel sometimes when I play. Lucky for me and for anyone listening, a harp makes beautiful sounds even when I'm the one playing it.
This summer, I have gone back to playing pieces in the beginner book. I must be getting better, because this time I can actually play them!
Want to see my newer larger harp? Here it is! This one does NOT fit on my lap.
